From Nietzsche's Notebooks Added reference to SpringFall 1873 27[48]. Nietzsche makes note of a favorite put-down. As far as insults go, it's classic Schopenhauer railing against academia: "der Krötenagilität seiner Gedanken" (the toad-like agility of [a university professor's] ideas). ▼Changes from the Old Geocities Website.
The old "Text-German"
and "Text-English" have been combined into single pages
as "Published Works," "Unpublished Works,"
"Lectures," "Notebooks," and
"Correspondence." The German half of the site is being worked on first, while the English half will appear after that's finished, although there are a few files now available in English. The "Published Works" page contains
files for every edition. E.g., the new site has the first
edition of The Birth of Tragedy (which was changed in
the subsequent editions), with some explanatory footnotes. So you
get to read editions in the form in which they were first
published, all in searchable html. The new
site also includes Marie Baumgartner's French translation of
Richard Wagner in Bayreuth. In addition, each published
work (Example 1, Example 2) has an "introductory page" consisting
of image/artwork plus a relevant selection from his
correspondence relating to the work, or a commentary with
background material. All of the published philological articles are
also available for the first time in proofread
html. The
"Unpublished Works" page contains files from
Nietzsche's School Years and Nietzsche's Basel Years. These are
all available in German. The English translations are being
published in both the ebook series, Friedrich Nietzsche in Words and
Pictures, and the ebook Nietzsche's Writings as a Student. The "Lectures" page lists Nietzsche's
Lectures at Basel University, Nietzsche's Courses at the Basel
Paedagogium, and Nietzsche's Public Lectures in the Great Hall of
the Museum of Basel University with introductory pages as
delineated above for the available texts and translations. The
"Correspondence" page is unchanged, although English
translations have yet to appear in a limited form. A great deal
of translations of his correspondence are being published in the ebook series. The "Notebooks" page is finished. The notes are different in that the text has links for all of the allusions to, and direct quotes from,
the books he read. Some of these links are also available in the
German text of the published works. All this has been done in
conjunction with "Nietzsche's Library," which brings us
to summarizing this revamped material. "Nietzsche's Library" is very
illuminating insofar as it really shows how much he confronted
his contemporaries, and should be of interest, if not
indispensable, to anyone writing on or researching Nietzsche. The library also has translations of the reviews of
his works, some of which, as we know regarding BGE, left the
reviewer either flummoxed (Conrad Hermann in Blätter für
literarische Unterhaltung) or quite derisive (George von
Gizycki in Deutsche Rundschau)both motivating
factors behind Nietzsche's decision to write GM. As of July 2012, the library has links to around 1300 books, while there are still around 575 books unavailable, since they have yet to be scanned by anyone. It's a lot of work revising over ten years of files, so if you
want to help keep the site alive, make a donation or purchase the ebooks.
